📌 On March 18 2024, TRIAL International, Asia Justice Coalition, REDRESS, FIDH -Fédération internationale pour les droits humains, Center for Justice and International Law - CEJIL and International Commission of Jurists, held a side event to the 55th session of the Human Rights Council on 'The Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Humanity: Advancing Towards A New Convention'.   🔎 The UN General Assembly’s Sixth Committee will resume its discussion on the Draft articles on Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Humanity in early April and is set to take a decision on next steps in October this year. 2024 is therefore a crucial year for advancing towards a Convention specifically dedicated to crimes against humanity, a universal binding legal instrument that would fill an important gap in the international justice system.   🎤 His Excellency Mr. Jürg Lauber, Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the UN and to the other international organizations in Geneva, delivered opening remarks. We delved into the subject matter of the event with Marco Sassòli, Professor of International Law at the University of Geneva; with Simon Walker, Chief of the Rule of Law and Democracy Section at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; with Ian Seiderman, Legal and Policy Director at the International Commission of Jurists and with Holly Huxtable, Legal Officer at REDRESS while Pamela Capizzi, Head of Pool of Expertise at TRIAL International, moderated the discussions. Mr Edward Kawa, Head of Chancery and Minister Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, shared some closing remarks. #CrimesAgainstHumanity #CAHTreatyNow #HRC55
